Who was Titian?
Tizian, full name Tiziano Vecellio, was probably born between 1488 and 1490 in Pieve di Cadore near Belluno in the Republic of Venice and died on 27 August 1576 in Venice.
He is considered the main representative of Venetian painting of the 16th century and the most important master of the Italian High Renaissance. He came to Venice when he was nine years old and was trained by the brothers Gentile and Giovanni Bellini. Titian opened his own workshop and became famous throughout Europe. In 1533, Titian was summoned to the court of Charles V, where he was appointed court painter. His popularity increased since he was invited in Rome by the Pope Paul III and was very close to the son of Emperor Phillipp II to Augsburg. Titian died old in 1576 of the plague. Even at this time he was probably the most successful painter of Venetian history.
He was known by his contemporaries as “the sun under the stars” and was one of the most versatile and, with a total of 646 works, also the most prolific Italian painter of his time. He painted portraits, landscapes and mythological and religious themes. His most famous works include the Sacred and Profane Love, the Assumption of the Virgin, the Pesaro Madonna, the Venus of Urbino and the Venus with a Mirror. His distinctive colorism is the main characteristic of his works. He kept is for his whole life.
Shortly before his death Titian changed sharply his artistic style, which was probably the beginning of Baroque.
